Oral History Program Coordinator
HistoryMiami, located in downtown Miami, is a well-established history and culture institution with approximately thirty-five full- and part-time employees and an annual budget of three million dollars. HistoryMiami has over twenty-five years of experience with oral history-related projects and with connecting to Miami’s diverse communities through its multiple divisions, including its South Florida Folklife Center, its Archives and Research Center, and the Museum of HistoryMiami. The Oral History Program Coordinator will manage the institution’s oral history activities. These activities include the collection, preservation and presentation of the stories of South Florida.
Job Responsibilities:
- Assess the institution’s current oral history initiatives. Position these activities for greater development and impact.
- Create innovative oral history projects.
- Research funding sources for oral history initiatives. Write and manage project grants.
- Conduct and/or oversee the collection of oral histories.
- Coordinate the preservation of and access to oral histories in conjunction with HistoryMiami’s Archives and Research Center.
- Produce educational products based on oral histories (public and school programs, web content, exhibition content, etc.).
- Represent HistoryMiami within the oral history field.
Position Specifications:
- Education—Requires a minimum of a M.A. in history, folklore, anthropology or related discipline, or equivalent experience. Three years’ experience with oral history initiatives or related projects and a minimum of two years' project management experience.
- Proven experience in conceptualizing, developing, and implementing oral history or similar projects.
- Demonstrated experience in conducting recorded interviews. Previous experience with training and managing interviewers is desirable.
- Knowledge of best practices for recording and archiving digital audio and video interviews.
- Strong project management skills are essential, as is the ability to multitask.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team, with leadership qualities.
- Strong writing and editing skills.
- High level of interest in and passion for working with Miami’s diverse community.
- Knowledge of spoken and/or written Spanish is preferable, but not mandatory.
