Lincoln, the Civil War, and Native Americans
The Civil War era pit North against South and pro-slavery against anti-slavery factions, and ultimately revolutionized relations between Black and white people – but Native Americans were swept up in the war, too. They chose sides, expressed their own views on the slavery question and served in the armed forces. And on one momentous occasion, a delegation of tribal chiefs made history by meeting in the White House with President Abraham Lincoln.
This conference features renowned panelists and will be moderated by author, Abraham Lincoln scholar and Civil War era political expert Harold Holzer. The discussions will explore the neglected history of Native Americans in the Civil War era.
