Nothing Stopped Sophie
by Cheryl Bardoe, illustrated by Barbara McClintock

When her parents took away her candles to keep their young daughter from studying math...nothing stopped Sophie. When a professor discovered that the homework sent to him under a male pen name came from a woman...nothing stopped Sophie. And when she tackled a math problem that male scholars said would be impossible to solve...still, nothing stopped Sophie.

Activity 1: Self-Portrait Inspired by Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo (1910 -1954) can be seen as one of the most significant artists of the twentieth century, not just in her native Mexico, but worldwide. Repeatedly painting her own image, she built up a body of work that explored her identity as a woman, artist, Mexican, person with disability, and political activists.

Materials

  • Pencils or color pencils. You can also use crayons or pastels.
  • Paper
  • Eraser

Instructions

Consider the choices made by Frida Kahlo in showing herself and her own cultural identity in her self-portrait. How can you express you own identity? For example, Kahlo’s father was German and her mother Mexican, so she represented her mixed cultural identities in her own artwork.

  1. Start with a light outline of the shape of your face.
  2. Do your hairline after your outline.
  3. Add your eyes, nose, mouth, and ears
  4. Add shadows and smudge them.
  5. After you have the outline and some of the shading done, it’s time for the fine details.
  6. Once you’re finished with your face, draw the neck.
  7. Add items to represent your identity.

Activity 2: Coloring Page

Maya Angelou was an American poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist. She published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, several books of poetry, and is credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning over 50 years. She received dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary degrees.
