Past
Hired in 1933 by the Miami Daily News, part of the Cox newspaper chain, Anne Mergen had the distinction of being the first woman editorial cartoonist in the United States, a status that would continue until her retirement in 1956. Mergen’s original cartoon renderings eventually received national attention and paved the way for other women to enter this field.
Anne Mergen: Florida Cartoons is an exhibition that comments on current events in Miami during the 1940s and 1950s. Mergen’s cartoons brought awareness to many issues that affected Florida including politics, the environment and tourism.
