Classroom Outreach

Map ProgramMap Programs

HistoryMiami's Map Program is one of our most popular and successful outreach programs. Students learn about geography through this "hands-on, minds-on" approach while having the opportunity to move around a large map and interact with our teaching collection. Critical thinking is elicited from students to compare and contrast the past and present. Students are also encouraged to visualize and discuss what the future may be like, based on patterns of the past.

Select one of the following map programs:

  • Sunshine State Map: Come and explore the great state of Florida through our interactive floor map. Learn about the various geographical, historical and cultural aspects of Florida and why it has become such an important and extraordinary state.
  • Latin American Map: Explore the rich cultural heritage of the Americas through a giant floor map and amazing artifacts! Participants will understand how Miami has embraced the development of its famously rich cultural diversity and its close connection to its international neighbors.
  • Our World Map: Be a part of the early trade routes, cross the oceans with the European explorers and learn about the great cultures of the past and present as you move through our life size map. Learn how all people are similar while celebrating our differences.

Miami Expressions

Miami Expressions introduces students to some of Miami’s multicultural heritage through interactive presentations of local folk traditions, led by some of South Florida’s traditional artists.

Everyone and every community has folk traditions, therefore, studying folk life provides a readily accessible subject in which students can be the experts.  By learning from folk artists, students acquire new perspectives about themselves, their culture, and the culture of others; introducing multicultural heritage and multiple points of view to students in a positive manner.  By seeing the continuation of folk expressions in their communities, students can connect the past with the present.
