Frequently Asked Questions
What is Teen Miami?
Teen Miami is an audience building and exhibition development project aimed at addressing the low visitation of teens to museums both locally and nationally. 21 teens from across Miami-Dade County have been given three year internships at HistoryMiami to learn about museum work, conduct oral histories about teen culture in Miami across generations and help develop a Teen Miami exhibition, which will open at HistoryMiami in 2012.
Teen Miami was preceded by similar but not identical projects including Teen Chicago, developed by the Chicago History Museum and Teenage New Jersey 1941-1975 developed by the New Jersey Historical Society.
Who are the teen participants?
The 21 teen participants are a diverse group of 10th and 11th graders from across Miami-Dade County. They come from many different cultural backgrounds and attend various public, private and magnet programs.
How did you select the teen participants?
The teen participants were selected in May of 2010 through a competitive application and interview process.
What are the teen participants working on?
In the summer of 2010, the teen participants completed an intensive introduction to museology program, where they learned about the role museums play in our society and were introduced the different functions of museums departments.
Throughout the 2010-2011 school year, they are studying teen culture and being trained in science of oral histories. In the summer of 2011, they will conduct oral histories with different generations of Miamians about their teen lives and experiences. The content from these interviews will be used to direct the content of the Teen Miami exhibition, which will open in September of 2012. During the 2011-2012 school year, the teens will be working on developing programmatic elements of the exhibition.
