A Message from Resident Historian, Dr. Paul S. George:
Our class will take us from the topic of Florida’s unique topography and its native populations to the Spanish and British colonial eras to Territorial Florida and Statehood. From there, we will look briefly at the folly of secession, the Civil War and Reconstruction. The Gilded Age that followed was instrumental to Florida’s development as northern investment moved in and the tiny state (in terms of population) began developing quickly. The new century brought sustained growth, speculative real estate ventures and development, and military bases.  Florida as a resort Mecca was also firmly established in the century’s early decades.   World War II not only brought hundreds of thousands of soldiers and sailors to the Sunshine State, but it also served as a launching pad from the most explosive growth in the state’s history.  The space program, new, planned residential communities, a booming medical and higher educational sector, and various cultural contributions are just some of the elements of Florida’s development story in the past fifty years. Today, the Sunshine State is home to 19.3 million people, placing it third in size among states in the U.S. There is no better place to study Florida history than at HistoryMiami Museum with its rich resources. Our class will explore Florida’s rich history through lectures, Q and A, images, and tours to historic sites, exhibitions and a film repository. Through these tours, we will employ Miami as a microcosm for the state’s story over the centuries and even millennia.
